This is a small watercolour painting of one of the 24-or-so strawberries I picked from my garden today. I’ve been growing a type of perpetual strawberry for about three years (Fragoo) and now have a couple of patches to pick from. Delicious!

This painting comprises a couple of the antique bottles with flowers that I painted in oils from life over the past month or so. If you’ve ever sat down to paint a tulip from life, you’ll know that it is a wiser decision to wait until the flower has bloomed and withered — because they move so quickly! Bleeding hearts are fast movers too. You cut a strand from your garden, plop it in a vase and poof, it tilts and twists before your eyes. Painting from life really teaches about the subtleties of the natural world. I’m grateful for that. It is a wonderful way to view things that might appear stationary, when really, they’re grooving along to a tune all their own.
