To Sausalito

This is an image that stuck with me on my recent trip to San Francisco taking the ferry to Sausalito. This is an oil sketch, I love his green shirt, everything else in this image is up for grabs. Have been thinking of creating a larger painting from this scenario and have already carved out a lot of detail. I think I know my next steps with it. Stay tuned.

Happy Holly Days

Just a quick life study from the garden, it might be -12C but there is plenty in the garden to hint at renewed life in the spring. We’ve passed the shortest day of the year so the daylight lasts a little longer each day. Just a few freezing months of dreaming about the things that will grow again. Glad the holly offers up its berries under the snow.

Pilot No. 1

I went downtown today hoping Vim and Vigour (tugboats) would be resting along the waterfront but it appears they are busy elsewhere. So I found Pilot No. 1 tied to the waterfront and found a nice shady spot to plein air paint. It was about 24C today, absolutely fantastic painting weather. Fun sketching along the waterfront.

Obviously this antique bottle is on a boat. A boat listing heavily to one side, perhaps in a great storm, sailing towards calmer waters with The Old Spice Man. Yeah, that’s it.  ;)

Oil on board, (12.5 x 17.5 cm), painted from life (as usual).

This is an earlier and smaller oil sketch for a winter landscape sketch near Wolfville, Nova Scotia. I’m trying to determine how much of the red soil should poke through the snow in this painting (not very much). I intend to work up a much larger studio painting from these two sketches this spring depicting this approximate area (Blomidon in the background).

This is a small oil sketch on board (12.5 x 17.5 cm) for a landscape painting with a dramatic sky that I’m working on and am quite excited about. This little dramatic sketch seems moody, just like the sky. A good way to say good bye to February. :)
