I borrowed the light from a friend’s studio in Manhattan when I visited her one day about five years ago, when I started this painting. Not that I’ve been working on it for five years ago, just that I started it then, worked on it here and there and finally finished it this week. My friend had extra large, gorgeous peaches set out on the table that overlooked a busy city street. The light falling in the windows reminded me of Vermeer. I thought it was a beautiful studio to work in and bought a small painting of hers on that day for my collection too. Visiting her in her studio was a highlight of a wonderful trip.

This cat looks like it posed for hours in a studio with that dark background but it started out as an image that caught my eye in 2005, a friendly barn cat I had just woken up.

Bosc Pear

Remember that scene in City of Angels? The one where Nicholas Cage asks Meg Ryan what a pear tastes like and she tells him it “tastes like a pear,” but he really wants to know what a pear tastes “to you.”

Sigh. So romantic.

That movie was released in the spring of 1998, I’m not sure that I knew the name of this pear until then. I think I only glanced at it on the grocery shelf as it sat there with its dull, rough skin that contains this sweet fruit but after that, I took notice.

To Sausalito

This is an image that stuck with me on my recent trip to San Francisco taking the ferry to Sausalito. This is an oil sketch, I love his green shirt, everything else in this image is up for grabs. Have been thinking of creating a larger painting from this scenario and have already carved out a lot of detail. I think I know my next steps with it. Stay tuned.

Happy Holly Days

Just a quick life study from the garden, it might be -12C but there is plenty in the garden to hint at renewed life in the spring. We’ve passed the shortest day of the year so the daylight lasts a little longer each day. Just a few freezing months of dreaming about the things that will grow again. Glad the holly offers up its berries under the snow.
