This painting comprises a couple of the antique bottles with flowers that I painted in oils from life over the past month or so. If you’ve ever sat down to paint a tulip from life, you’ll know that it is a wiser decision to wait until the flower has bloomed and withered — because they move so quickly! Bleeding hearts are fast movers too. You cut a strand from your garden, plop it in a vase and poof, it tilts and twists before your eyes. Painting from life really teaches about the subtleties of the natural world. I’m grateful for that. It is a wonderful way to view things that might appear stationary, when really, they’re grooving along to a tune all their own.

I love the rivers that carve their way through the dykelands near Wolfville, Nova Scotia. This is an oil sketch from one such area. The heavy red mud changes every minute as the waters change direction.
